Sell My House: A Quick Checklist

Last year almost 7 million homes were sold across the country, and that number is expected to grow in the next year or two.

If you’re thinking, “I want to sell my house, but I don’t know where to start!” keep reading for a list of things to start tackling to get the job done.

While it takes a bit of work to sell a house, it will all pay off in the end!

1. Start with the Exterior

First impressions matter, which is why it’s a good idea to start by looking at the outside of your home. Is there anything you could do to make it look more appealing?

For example, adding colorful plants or giving the front door a fresh coat of paint can make a big difference. It’s also important to keep your lawn well-maintained by cutting the grass and pruning all shrubs and trees.

2. Declutter Your Spaces

This is a major one – having a cluttered home makes it look like your house doesn’t have enough storage space to hold someone’s belongings.

Either donate things you don’t need or pack up excess clutter and store it somewhere else. Make sure all of the counters, tables, and other surfaces (including floors!) are free of piles of items or too many knickknacks.

3. Check for Odors

A bad smell can be an immediate turn-off for someone buying your home.

Ask someone who doesn’t live in your household to come to do a smell test for you to see if they smell any unpleasant odors in your home. If they do smell something a little off, there are lots of ways you can combat the odor, from opening the windows to air out the house or using fresh-smelling solvents.

4. Fix Broken Details

Go around your home and look for anything that might detract a buyer from being interested in your house. Are there scuff marks on the baseboards? Any blinds that are broken? Any doorknobs that don’t work quite right?

These are all things that should be fixed to ensure your home is looking its best. The tiny details matter and they can make the difference between your home is selling or not.

5. Depersonalize It

Take out any personal items, like photographs of family or unique artwork you’ve curated. This includes minor things too, like magnets or kids’ work on the fridge.

You want to create a blank canvas for someone who comes in to envision themselves living in easily, and this is harder to do if the walls are covered in pictures of you!

6. Keep It Clean

While this is possibly the hardest part, keeping the house clean at all times is essential to helping it sell. You never know when someone might want to see it at the last minute.

Keep the floors swept or vacuumed, the mirrors sparkling, and the beds made at all times. Avoid cluttering up the home again and make an effort to clean up after yourself throughout the day so the mess doesn’t pile up.
